A record number of Americans – 115.6 million to be exact – will travel this holiday season, from Saturday, December 21 through Wednesday, January 1. That is the highest number of travelers since since the American Automobile Association (AAA) began keeping track back in 2000. That number represents an increase of 3.9% over last year, or 4.3 million more Americans traveling for the holidays.

More than 104 million will drive to their destinations and, INRIX, a global transportation analytics company, expects traffic delays to be the worst on Thursday, December 26, with afternoon delays reaching nearly double congestion-free drive times in major U.S. cities.

If you are traveling by car, expect marginal delays throughout the holiday week, but your trip could take twice as long on Thursday and Friday afternoon. Larger cities like Atlanta and Detroit. could see triple the delays.
