The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises that an interstate widening project for I 64/I 75 is scheduled to begin in Lexington. The route location will be between the Newtown Pike and Paris Pike Interchanges.

The area is along an approximate 6.7 mile section where the two interstates are combined in Fayette County. The project begins at the Newtown Pike Interchange (milepoint 115) and ends at the Paris Pike Interchange (milepoint 113). The project will widen the interstate to eight lanes (four 12-foot lanes in each direction). In addition, improvements will be made to the ramps at Newtown Pike and Paris Pike.

The purpose of the project is to decrease congestion, improve safety and roadway traffic capacity. The plan is necessary to address increased traffic as well as anticipated, continued population growth in Fayette and surrounding counties. It is expected that traffic on this section will exceed 130,000 vehicles per day by 2040. This is significantly over the capacity of the current six-lane (three 12-foot lanes in each direction) highway.

Congestion issues currently exist at the interchanges. Traffic incidents in the corridor cause major “non-recurrent” congestion problems. A review of crash data from the Kentucky State Police data base for this section of the interstate also shows that the number of crashes has increased every year since 2012.

The project will begin Tuesday, September 6. The traveling public will be informed of changes, and impacts to traffic patterns through advisories furnished to media outlets. The anticipated completion date is November 1, 2024.
