The Florida Department of Transportation reports the following construction update for the I-75 Interchange Improvements at Big Bend Road (CR672) project in the Tampa Bay area.

I-75 mainline construction activities:

  • Temporary widening activities along northbound I-75; ongoing
  • New traffic pattern of southbound I-75 through the Big Bend Road interchange; completed

I-75 ramps construction activities:

  • I-75 southbound exit ramp to eastbound Big Bend Road (Ramp A):
    • Placement of earthwork material; ongoing
    • Pile driving; ongoing
  • I-75 southbound exit ramp to westbound Big Bend Road (Ramp A-1):
    • Pile driving; ongoing
  • I-75 southbound entrance ramp from eastbound Big Bend Road (Ramp B):
    • Construction activities; begin fall of 2023
  • I-75 southbound entrance ramp from westbound Big Bend Road (Ramp B-1):
    • Construction activities; begin fall of 2023
  •  I-75 northbound exit ramp to westbound Big Bend Road (Ramp C):
    • Construction activities; begin late summer of 2023
  • I-75 northbound exit ramp to eastbound Big Bend Road (Ramp C-1):
    • Construction activities; begin late summer of 2023
  • I-75 northbound entrance ramp from eastbound Big Bend Road (Ramp D):
    • Placement of earthwork material; ongoing
    • Pile driving; ongoing
  • I-75 northbound entrance ramp from westbound Big Bend Road (Ramp D-1):
    • Placement of earthwork material; ongoing

Bridge and pedestrian tunnel construction activities:

  • I-75 southbound exit ramp (Ramp A) over Old Big Bend Road/Big Bend Road:
    • Pile driving; ongoing
    • Rebar installation as part of pier construction; ongoing
  • I-75 southbound exit ramp (Ramp A-1) over Old Big Bend Road:
    • Pile driving; ongoing
  • I-75 northbound entrance ramp (Ramp D & D1) over Old Big Bend Road:
    • Placement of Earthwork; ongoing
  • I-75 northbound entrance ramp (Ramp D1 & Big Bend Road) over Bullfrog Creek:
    • Construction activities; begin late fall of 2022
  • Pedestrian tunnel under the I-75 northbound entrance ramp:
    • Construction activities; begin winter of 2022
  • Old Big Bend Road bridge over Bullfrog Creek:
    • Bridge removal; completed

Roadway construction activities:

  • Big Bend Road:
    • Cleared for future roadway widening; completed
    • Gravity wall installed just east of Waterset Boulevard; completed
    • Temporary asphalt placement for median widening; completed
    • Temporary traffic signal installed at Waterset Boulevard and Simmons Loop; completed
    • New traffic pattern of eastbound and westbound travel lanes; completed
  • Old Big Bend Road:
    • Cleared for future roadway widening; completed
    • New traffic pattern of eastbound and westbound travel lanes; completed
    • Constructing temporary shared-use path; ongoing
    • Removing existing bridge over Bullfrog Creek; ongoing
    • Utility relocation activities; ongoing
  • Bullfrog Creek Road:
    • New traffic pattern near intersection with Old Big Bend Road; completed
    • Clearing for future roadway reconstruction; ongoing
    • Drainage installation; ongoing
    • Utility relocation activities; ongoing

Ongoing construction activities:

  • Retaining wall installation; ongoing
  • Maintenance of traffic control devices, erosion control, and litter removal throughout the project limits.

Future construction activities:

  • New traffic pattern of northbound I-75 through the Big Bend Road interchange; begins August of 2022
  • Highway lighting installation; begins late 2022
  • Temporary traffic signal installation at Covington Gardens; ongoing

Hillsborough County utility relocation activities:

  • Water main installation of 36’’ pipe along the south side of Big Bend Road; ongoing
  • Force main installation of 4” pipe along the north side of Big Bend Road; ongoing
