The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) reports that a key feature of the Interstate 75/I-74 Mill Creek Expressway – Phase 5B project is the construction of a new ramp from I-75 South to I-74 West, and the ramp is now ready to be opened to traffic.
In order to open the new ramp and place traffic controls for the next phase of construction, a full closure of I-74 West, from the I-75 North and South exits to just west of the southbound Beekman Street overpass, is in effect tonight, February 23, and continuing until 5:00 a.m. Monday, February 26.
While it is closed, traffic from I-75 North to I-74 West will be detoured by way of westbound S.R. 126 (Ronald Reagan Cross County Highway) and I-275 South to I-74. Traffic from I-75 South to I-74 West will be detoured by way of the Sixth Street viaduct to westbound U.S. 50 (River Road) and S.R. 128 North to I-74. The on-ramps from northbound and southbound Beekman Street/Colerain Avenue to I-74 West, however, will remain open throughout the weekend.
Lane restrictions are also in effect on I-75 South, between Mitchell Avenue on-ramp and the Ludlow Bridge overpass with I-74 West on-ramp, with a single lane closed through Monday morning, and a double-lane closure in this same section of I-75 South in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday. Along with these restrictions on I-75 South and I-74 West, the left lane of I-74 East, between the Montana Avenue on-ramp and the Beekman Street exit (Exit 18), is closed until 6 a.m. Saturday.
Once restrictions are lifted Monday morning, motorists will be traveling on the new ramp from I-75 South to I-74 West, and they will also have access to the Beekman Street/Colerain Avenue exit at the end of the new flyover bridge.
For motorists traveling from I-75 North, there will be no direct access from I-74 West to the Beekman Street/Colerain Avenue exit. Instead, drivers will be detoured by way of a Texas Turnaround at Montana Avenue, looping motorists off I-74 West onto Montana Avenue and back onto I-75 East to the Beekman Street exit.
In conjunction with the detour, temporary signals at the northbound Beekman Street off-ramp from I-74 East have been installed. These signals, which are currently in flashing mode, will be in stop-and-go operation by approximately 3 a.m. Monday, and these will remain in place through early December.
During the 2024 construction season, the Mill Creek Expressway – Phase 5B project will see the reconstruction of the I-74 bridges over Spring Grove Avenue and Elmore Street, as well as the replacement of median barrier, pavement, highway lighting, signage, traffic monitoring system, noise walls, bridge painting, and drainage.
The $84.9 million project began in the spring of 2022, and it is on schedule to be completed in the summer of 2025.
Motorists are reminded to use additional caution through the work zone.
