I-75 Lane, Shoulder Closures for Construction in Tampa Bay Thru November
Bradenton Area Insider TipsThe Inside Scoop From Seasoned I-75 Travelers
Avoid rush hours religiously (7-9 AM, 4-6:30 PM): This stretch gets brutally congested with Tampa commuters. Even midday traffic can be heavy November-April (snowbird season). If possible, travel early morning or after 7 PM.
Watch for the "Mixmaster" merge (I-75/I-275 split): Just north of Bradenton, the highway splits toward Tampa/St. Pete. The left lanes go to I-275 (St. Pete/beaches), right lanes continue on I-75 (Tampa). It's confusing and locals see accidents here constantly. Stay right if continuing north on I-75.
Last affordable gas before the bridge: If heading to beaches/Anna Maria Island, fill up before crossing the Manatee River. Gas is significantly cheaper on the mainland than on the islands or in Sarasota.
Construction is perpetual: I-75 through this area has ongoing widening projects. Lane shifts and reduced speed zones are common. Keep extra following distance - locals speed through construction zones, but FHP (Florida Highway Patrol) loves to ticket here.
